There are a few main steps necessary the first time you transfer files using GridFTP:
- Requesting a NetID
- Requesting a CIRC Account
- Creating a Globus Online Account
- Setting up a GridFTP Endpoint
Requesting a NetID
Before you can access computing resources at the University of Rochester, you must have a NetID. If you’re already a student, faculty member, or staff member, you’re all set, you can skip this section and use your existing NetID.
If you do not currently have a NetID, you must obtain a Guest NetID.
If you’ve received an invitation email
If you’ve already received a Guest NetID invitation in your email, you can complete the steps included in the email.
If you haven’t received an invitation email
If you haven’t received a Guest NetID invitation email, you can request one. Your contact at the University of Rochester will need to provide you with their email address and NetID. You can then go to:
And click ‘Guest NetID Request Form,’ and complete the form.
Once you’ve completed the steps above, you will be emailed a link with your Guest NetID and an identification code. You will then be able to create your password.
Requesting a CIRC Account
In order to use CIRC’s storage systems, you must request an account. If you already have an account with CIRC, you can skip this step.
To request an account, complete the online form using the link below, so that your request to access the system may be processed. Please fill out the Faculty Sponsor information using your contact at the University, and mention that you are intending to use GridFTP.
You will receive an e-mail to confirm your request for an account, and a follow-up e-mail notifying you when your account has been created. Please note that this account will use the same credentials as your NetID.
To fill out an account request form, follow the link:
Logging into Globus
In order to use Globus, you must visit https://globusonline.org, and click on the Login button. Then select
University of Rochester in the Use your existing organizational login menu. You will be prompted for your NetID and password.
Setting up an Endpoint
GridFTP uses ‘endpoints’ as the sources and destinations for file transfers. Although CIRC’s storage systems are already an endpoint, you must also set up your computer as an endpoint.
When you sign into Globus Online, you will be presented with the following window:
Here, you can click on
Endpoints and then on
add Globus Connect Personal endpoint
Give your endpoint a name, like 'MyComputer' or 'LabPC' and click
Generate a Setup Key.
You can then select a download for your operating system, and install the GridFTP client program .
Once the client downloads, open the downloaded file, and you will be prompted for the key you just generated. Copy and paste it into the Setup Key field.
You will then be able to use the Globus client.
